The four dates people confuse

Most deadline panic comes from treating these as the same date. They are not, and only one of them is usually fixed.

1. The date your current visa ceases. This is on your grant notice, not on your passport stamp. It is the one that actually matters and it does not move.
2. The date a bridging visa comes into effect. A bridging visa granted with a new application usually does not start until the current visa ends. Until then you are on the old visa and its conditions, not the bridging visa's.
3. The date you lodge. Within your control, and the only lever you have over the whole timeline.
4. The Department's processing time. Not a deadline and not a promise. It is a percentile of applications already decided, so half of them took longer than the number published. Nobody can shorten it, and an agent who says they can is breaching section 26 of the Code of Conduct.

Why the long-lead items are the ones that hurt

The steps in the table above are not ordered by importance. They are ordered by how long they take, because the risk in a visa timeline is almost never the work an agent does. It is the things that depend on somebody else entirely.

An overseas police certificate is the clearest example. It costs very little and requires almost no effort, and it can still take two months because a police force in another country is processing it at their own pace. There is no premium service and no amount of paying an agent more that changes it. If it is started on day one it is invisible; if it is started in week seven it becomes the reason an application is late.

Health examinations have the opposite failure mode. Results are generally valid for a limited period, so a medical done far too early can expire before a decision is made, and then has to be done again at your own cost.

What to do if the date is already close

Two things are worth more than anything else, and both are free.

• Find out exactly what your current visa says. Not what you remember, not what somebody told you. The grant notice, or VEVO.
• Get the long-lead items moving before you have chosen anyone. Police certificates and health examinations do not depend on which agent you use, so starting them costs you nothing if you later change your mind about the rest.

Then, if you are going to use a professional, compare properly rather than taking the first one who answers the phone. Urgency is the condition in which people are most likely to pay too much to somebody they have not checked. Does lodging an application stop my current visa from expiring?

No. Lodging generally triggers a bridging visa, which is a different thing from extending the visa you hold. The bridging visa has its own conditions, and they are frequently not the same as the conditions on the visa that ended.

Can an agent speed up the Department?

No, and it is a breach of section 26 of the Code of Conduct to claim otherwise. What a professional can genuinely affect is whether the application is complete when it is lodged, which is a real difference because an incomplete application waits for a request for more information before anyone looks at it again.

What if my deadline has already passed?

The options narrow by the day rather than all at once, so it is still worth speaking to a registered migration agent or an immigration lawyer immediately. What is possible after a visa ceases depends on circumstances that only somebody who can lawfully advise you should assess.
